Sit/Stay; Down/Stay; Stand/Stay or Wait
You don’t have to teach all three positions, but your dog should know what you mean when you want him to stop moving until he’s released.
A Release Command
Teach your dog a special word or short phrase that means they are free to stop doing your last command. This can be used with all the other commands listed above. This is your dog’s “off” switch.
Loose Leash Walking/Heel
For your dog and your own dog’s enjoyment, teach them to walk nicely on a leash. Other people and dogs will be more comfortable around you and your dog if you look like you are in control.
Everyone would like to have a well-behaved dog that they can enjoy life with and with the proper training can take anywhere with them. Dogs have a whole different culture than we do and what they consider ‘proper’ is different that our idea of ‘proper’. But since we want to include them in our life, it is important to teach them a few behaviors that allow them the freedom to be a part of our lives.
I can help you teach you and your dog these basic commands. Private one-on-one training is faster than group classes as my attention is entirely on you and your dog. I will show you simple exercises that your dog will find fun and hopefully have you looking forward to working with your dog instead of feeling like it is a tedious chore.
Attention
Teach your dog that when it hears its name, it means to look at you by making eye contact.
Recall
Teach your dog that when you call, it should automatically come to you. This can be a lifesaving command.
Leave It
Teach your dog that no matter what he has or is going for to back away from the item or person. This is another lifesaving command. It can be used for dogs that jump up on people, counter-surfing, or any improper interaction.
